One of the best motorcycle rallies to attend at the beginning of the year is without a doubt Thunder by the Bay in Sarasota, Florida. This event brings in the best of music, vendors, parties, contests, and more. This year, the 23rd Thunder by the Bay took place over February 19th through the 21st at the Sarasota Fairgrounds and the High Seas Rally was on hand with a booth giving away free swag and the chance to win a free cruise!
We had the opportunity to speak with Lucy Nicandri, the Festival Organizer and Executive Director for the Suncoast Charities for Children, about this year’s exciting event. In terms of Covid-19, we asked Lucy what changes had to be made in planning this year’s Festival. Nicandri shared, “Expanded safety precautions and social distancing measures were implemented for the safety and enjoyment of all who attended.” Just some of the new safety precautions included the installation of plexiglass at all bar serving areas, designated walk areas, masks were encouraged when social distancing was not possible, and hand sanitizer stations were readily available.”
The fabulous “Born To Be Wild” Kickoff Party took place outdoors on the opening night of the Festival. Guests enjoyed an open bar, great food, and live music by Nobody’s Fool and The Tucci Project. In addition to the Friday night Kickoff Party, the Sarasota Fairgrounds opened the gates at 5:00 pm. Well over 70 vendors were waiting for eager bikers as well as a great array of food vendors in the food court. Food, music, friends, and fun. And it just keeps getting better every year.
Born To Ride magazine presented Choppertown Live, an all-out 1960’s-style chopper show featuring over 50 custom bike builders and their latest wild chopper motorcycles. Saturday, February 20, the gates opened at 11 am to expectant crowds on scooter lovers. A new and exciting competition this year was the Motorcycle Stereo “Sound Off” Competition, with amazing touring motorcycles out there that had unique and exceptional stereo units. That’s a nice way to say they were extremely LOUD!
Live music began at 1:30 pm with Twinkle and Rock Soul Radio, 3:30 pm with One Night Rodeo, 6:00 pm with Maiden Cane, then at 8:00 pm featured headliner Molly Hatchet hit the main stage to rock the house down. That’s when the band announced the winner of the free cruise on the High Seas Rally. The amazed winner was Louis Bavaro, a member of the Blue Knights of Sarasota. Louis and a guest will get a complimentary cruise this coming October on the one and only High Seas Rally!
Next month, join the High Seas Rally at Daytona Bike Week, the ultimate run to the sun. Come see us at our booth out at Destination Daytona. We’ll be there March 5th to the 14th. Who knows, you might just win a free cruise on the best biker event ever to sail the seven seas!
